THEY ARE - AFRICA

KAIs SAIED

TIME IN OFFICE

Since 2019

KNOWN FOR

He has been widely criticized for his authoritarian tendencies. One of the main reasons for this is his frequent use of executive power to bypass the country's democratic institutions and make unilateral decisions. He has also been accused of suppressing freedom of speech and press by targeting journalists and media outlets that criticize his policies. Additionally, Saied has made several appointments to key positions without consulting the parliament, further consolidating his power, undermining checks and balances, disregarding the principles of democracy and threatening the country's fragile political stability. He was re-elected in 2024.

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

TIME IN OFFICE

Since 2014

KNOWN FOR

He went to power in a military coup. Despite promising democratic reform, he has consistently demonstrated authoritarian tendencies throughout his rule. He has cracked down on political dissent, jailed opposition leaders and journalists, and restricted media freedom. The government

has also passed laws that limit NGOs and civil society organizations, further consolidating his power. Elections have been marred by allegations of fraud and intimidation, with

el-Sisi consistently winning by a large margin. Furthermore,

he has expanded the role of the military in the country's economy and politics, showing a disregard for civilian governance. His authoritarian actions have resulted in a lack of basic freedoms and human rights for the Egyptian people.

Paul Kagamé

TIME IN OFFICE

Since 2000

KNOWN FOR

His rule is considered authoritarian, and human rights groups accuse him of political repression. He won three elections, but none of these have been considered free or fair by international observers.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo

TIME IN OFFICE

Since 1979

KNOWN FOR

He is a military leader and politician who has ruled Equatorial Guinea since seizing power from his uncle in a coup in 1979. He is among the longest-serving heads of state in the world. His decades of authoritarian rule have been marked by human rights abuses and blatant corruption.

Unfortunately, more will come...
