Nicolás Maduro

TIME IN OFFICE

Since 2013

KNOWN FOR

Him and his security forces have been perpetrating a number of human rights violations in Venezuela. These include extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and use of military trials to prosecute civilians. Detainees have been subjected to torture, and protesters face brutal crackdowns. The government has taken advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to intensify their control over the population, using a state of emergency as a pretext for their actions. The lack of judicial independence has resulted in impunity for these crimes, with judicial authorities often being complicit in the abuses. These violations have been so widespread and systematic that a UN Fact-Finding Mission has concluded that they amount to crimes against humanity. In response, the International Criminal Court prosecutor has announced an investigation into possible crimes committed in Venezuela. On top of these human rights abuses, the country is also facing a dire humanitarian crisis, with millions lacking access to basic healthcare, proper nutrition and safe water. He was re-elected in 2024, but the electoral process is disputed.

He has been accused of corruption, human rights abuses,  silencing of the media, and refusing to accept the results of elections when the opposition wins. His government has used violence to suppress dissent and has repressed civil society organizations. He has been accused of manipulating the electoral process in his favor, and his government has been accused of violating the Nicaraguan constitution.
